Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan. 1872-1944. Dutch painter whose works, characterized by intersecting perpendicular lines and planes of primary colors, and writings, notably Neoplasticism (1920), profoundly influenced the development of abstract art. Mondriaan lived and worked in Amsterdam, The Hague, Paris and New York. In the last years of his life Mondriaan worked on a painting that would become his most famous work of art: Victory Boogie Woogie. He was still working on this painting when he died in New York in 1944.
